Can Hurricanes Ride Youth To Stanley Cup?

One thing we know is that when the Carolina Hurricanes are at full strength, they can be a problem for anybody. Over the course of the 2019-20 season they accumulated 81 points. Good enough to put them in position as the 4th seed entering the wacky play-in round of playoffs that we have been able to witness. This is where they dominated against an overall solid New York Rangers squad, completing a sweep in 3 games. Furthermore, this was WITHOUT star Defenseman Dougie Hamilton.

That leads us to the recent news of the expected return of Dougie Hamilton. While this shouldn’t be much of a surprise considering the initial thought was that it was possible he could return against the Rangers, this is still a very welcomed addition to what is a very young squad. In fact, at age 27, Hamilton is the 9th oldest person on the entire roster. However, if you look further into detail, he is the oldest player on what the Cane’s would typically roll out there as their first string unit. That means that having a star such as Hamilton back doesn’t just mean his skill-set would be a welcomed addition but his ability to lead a young team deep into the playoffs as a leader is an equally important addition that Hamilton brings to the table.

As of right now it looks as if the Washington Capitals will be next for the Carolina Hurricanes as they lead 1-0 heading into the 3rd period. With guys like Backstrom, Oshie, and Ovechkin leading the way this could be an interesting playoff round. However, I would surely be placing my money on the Hurricanes to win easily in a series versus Washington. However, what intrigues me is if it went the other way. What if the Bruins come back to beat the Capitals? Then we could potentially see Hamilton versus the very team that drafted him and where he spent the first three years of his career.

Overall, the only thing that I know is that if the Hurricanes are able to move forward playing with the same intensity that we saw them play with against the Rangers and especially if you add Hamilton back into the rotation, then this could very well be a team ready to ride youth to the Stanley Cup Finals. Perhaps even a Stanley Cup Championship? This would be it’s first championship since the 05-06 season. Buckle up, it’s about to be an icy ride.
